Coop Norandino - Peru

The reforestation initiative in Sierra Piura's upper area (3,000 m.a.s.l.) is a collaborative effort between nine caserios, Fair Trade Coffee Association Cepicafe, local Peruvian farmer group NorAndino, Progreso, AVSF-CICDA, and Netherlands-based firms Just-Green and ForestSense. The project aims to establish a sustainable forestry program that ensures a consistent supply of timber and firewood, alleviating the strain on the natural forest remnants and the forests in Sierra Piura's middle and lower ranges.

Financial gains from the carbon credits, accrued from the forest plantations at 3,000 m.a.s.l., will be channeled into adaptation and mitigation strategies for coffee farms in lower altitudes. This holistic approach not only supports sustainable forestry but also aids coffee growers in facing environmental challenges.

Economic Benefits

  • Sustainable Timber Production: The reforestation activities pave the way for a long-term sustainable forestry program, ensuring a consistent and profitable production of timber and firewood.
  • Revenue from Carbon Credits: Financial gains from the sale of carbon credits, generated by the forest plantations, are reinvested in the project, fueling further growth and development for the region.

Environmental Benefits

  • Preservation of Natural Forests: By producing sustainable timber and firewood, the project alleviates pressure on existing natural forest remnants, ensuring their conservation and longevity.
  • Carbon Sequestration: The forest plantations actively remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, playing a crucial role in mitigating the adverse effects of climate change.

Technological Benefits

  • Sustainable Forestry Techniques: The project employs advanced forestry practices tailored to the unique needs of the Sierra Piura region, ensuring the health and longevity of the trees planted.
  • Efficient Resource Management: Collaboration with local and international entities like ForestSense enables the adoption of modern methodologies and tools to monitor and manage the reforestation process effectively.
